The Greater Accra Region has been formally declared cholera-free by the Ghana Health Service (GHS) following 30 days in which no cases were reported.
A media workshop aimed at improving cholera risk reporting in the area was where the news was made.
Speaking to JoyNews, Akumatey Tetteh, the Regional EPI Manager for Greater Accra, affirmed the milestone and called it a significant public health accomplishment.
Tetteh stated, “At this time, I can state with confidence that Greater Accra is free of cholera.” In this year’s first and second quarters, we documented 151 instances and 10 fatalities. However, no additional cases have been reported as of yet. We are currently safe because there have been no reports of cholera based on our surveillance.
Eunice Joan Teah Dzagli, the Regional Health Promotion Officer for Greater Accra, emphasised the region’s dedication to preserving this standing, particularly in the rainy season.
The goal for this rainy season is to have zero cholera cases, she stated. A coordinated effort by the media, religious organisations, and other institutions is needed to accomplish this goal. Our goal is to avoid reverting to the difficulties we encountered in November, December, and January.
The announcement is a major milestone in the region’s attempts to improve public health and stop outbreaks in the future.
