GAF helicopter crashes at Adansi Akrofuom, occupants feared dead

Helicopter

A helicopter was enveloped in flames and charred beyond recognition after colliding with a tree in Adansi Akrofuom, Ashanti Region.

The unfortunate occurrence happened on the morning of Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

The aircraft, which apparently operates the Accra-Obuasi route every Wednesday, crashed under unknown circumstances.

Matthew Baah, the Assembly Member for the area, verified the occurrence in an interview with Adom FM’s Kasiebo Is Tasty. He said he was working on his farm when he got a distress call.

“After the accident, everything became silent. Residents who raced to the area discovered the chopper in flames,” he explained.

Initial findings imply that four persons were on board, as dismembered body parts were discovered at the crash scene. However, their identities have yet to be established.

While the actual reason of the disaster is still being investigated, Mr Baah said that unfavourable weather conditions may have played a role.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Armed Forces acknowledged in a statement made today that the helicopter on its route to Obuasi could not be spotted on its radar.

It stated that the helicopter had three crew members and five passengers.

The occupants were supposed to be going to a function in Obuasi. The programme marked the beginning of the government’s Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP), a flagship effort aimed at transforming Ghana’s artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) industry.

The Cabinet-approved plan builds on a proposal from the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and is consistent with President John Dramani Mahama’s objective of creating long-term jobs through responsible mining and skill development.

The new plan combines and changes the previous Community Mining Scheme (CMS) and National Alternative Employment and Livelihood plan (NAELP).

According to the Ministry, rCOMSDEP would develop regulated, community-owned mining cooperatives to bring ASM into better coordination and efficiency.

These cooperatives will receive professional training, legal concessions, and access to shared processing facilities outfitted with cutting-edge gold recovery equipment and water treatment systems.

This is a developing story.
