Foreign Affairs Ministry assures support for Ghanaians facing deportation from U.S.

Ghanaians who are facing deportation from the United States would be safely returned, reintegrated, and reunited, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reassured the public.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has detained more over 3,500 unauthorised aliens since President Donald Trump took office on January 20. This assurance follows the Trump administration’s increased immigration enforcement. Resuming deportation flights, some migrants are reportedly being flown by US military planes.

While Ghana’s embassy in Washington has not provided any significant updates, Minister for Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa told a press briefing in Accra prior to the launch of ECOWAS at 50 that the government was actively working behind the scenes to assist those who were impacted.

“We have chosen not to make the returnees’ details public for humanitarian and human rights reasons,” he said.

Our staff welcomes them upon arrival, assists with their reintegration, and facilitates their reunion with their families. To preserve their dignity and prevent needless public attention, we are also discreetly working with other partners.

The Minister reiterated Ghana’s dedication to protecting the welfare and rights of its nationals living overseas, especially when forced return is involved.
