Hackman Owusu-Agyeman, Chairman of the NPP National Council of Elders, has chastised the opposition NDC for his persistent inclination to question electoral processes and outcomes regardless of the conditions.
Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on Monday, November 26, the senior politician claimed the NDC’s stance threatens Ghana’s democratic progress.
“I don’t like the opposition’s posture, and they keep saying that if they don’t win, then something has happened,” the former Foreign Minister lamented.
“Believe me, if you bring Jesus Christ from heaven to come and become the Electoral Commissioner, they will still complain.”
The former New Juaben MP raised alarm about the NDC’s persistent claims against the Electoral Commission, claiming that they undermine public trust in the democratic process.
“These complaints are not helping anybody, and these threats and what have you are not benefiting nobody,” he said.”
He linked the NDC’s aggressive approach to broader problems with Ghana’s political institutions, especially Parliament.
“This has permeated society to the extent that even at our legislative organisation, i.e., in Parliament, things are not working the way we expect them to work,” said Mr. Owusu-Agyeman.
“They owe it to us for Parliament to function—it is for the people, not their property. It is not the Speaker’s property; it belongs to the people of Ghana. They should listen to us and move on.”
In reflecting on his goals for Ghana, Mr. Owusu-Agyeman voiced unhappiness with the country’s political issues.
“Sometimes, in my quiet moments, I feel like crying,” he told me.
“After working for the United Nations for 20 years, I left as head, and at the risk of sounding arrogant, I would have become the Director-General of the FAO. But I returned with the hope that we could replicate what had been accomplished elsewhere.
While admitting the military pauses that have hampered Ghana’s democratic evolution, Owusu-Agyeman emphasized the significance of building on the gains made thus far.
“We knew we would be able to make this country a great country and move forward, and Africa and the world would respect Ghana,” the president stated.
