According to the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), water and electricity tariffs will increase starting on May 3, 2025.

The revision adheres to the Commission’s quarterly schedule for tariff reviews for the first and second quarters of 2025.

Ensuring income stability for energy service providers while reducing the financial impact on consumers is the goal of the evaluation.

Under the revised rates, water and electricity tariffs will rise by 4.02% and 14.75%, respectively.

Many factors, including the existing hydro-thermal production mix, inflation forecasts, fuel prices (especially natural gas), and the Ghana cedi’s exchange rate against the US dollar, were cited by the PURC as the reasons for the revisions.

The Commission also mentioned in a statement released on Friday, April 11, the requirement to recoup 50% of the GHS976 million in unpaid income from earlier quarters of 2024. This repayment commitment had a big impact on the upward adjustment. The remaining 50% will be dispersed throughout later 2025 quarters in order to lessen the load on consumers.

The PURC underlined the need of rate increases in mitigating utility providers’ under-recoveries, which may lead to service interruptions if left unchecked. The Commission reiterated its resolve to balance the interests of utility suppliers and consumers in the face of persistent economic pressures, even in light of the rise.

The Commission will publish the complete details of the tariff adjustments in the government gazette and make them publicly accessible on its official website.
