Bawku conflict: Eight killed as gunmen block Bolgatanga-Tamale highway

Eight people were killed when gunmen blocked the Bolgatanga-Tamale route in Gbimsi, a hamlet adjacent to Walewale, and opened fire.

On Sunday, armed men put up roadblocks in Gbimsi and Walewale Town, stopping vehicles and identifying prospective targets.

Passengers detained in the barricade were interrogated about their identities, and in the fatal incident, about eight people were killed and two vehicles were set on fire, raising serious security concerns.

A survivor described the terrible experience: “I was traveling from Sunyani to Paga. When they arrived in Walewale, they had set up barricades and were looking for someone to kill. The situation continued over an hour, and security did not respond.”

The incident is thought to be linked to the ongoing Bawku Conflict, which has resurfaced after a period of relative calm.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has assured travelers of additional protection along the expressway in the coming days.

In a statement, the Ghana Police Service stated that they are attempting to control the security situation in Bawku, its neighboring regions, and along the Bolgatanga-Walewale-Tamale highway.

Aside from the police and military deployments in Bawku and its surroundings, the police stated that there is also a joint police and military deployment along the Bolgatanga-Walewale-Tamale highway to maintain security and traffic management.

“The security agencies want to reassure the public that we remain committed to ensuring peace, security, and law and order in Bawku and its surroundings.
