Randy Abbey, the CEO of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), has sued Kwame Baffoe, also known as Abronye, the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), for defamation.

Citing remarks made by Abronye on radio that he characterised as untrue and detrimental to his reputation, Dr. Abbey is requesting GH¢20 million in damages in a writ filed with the Accra High Court on Tuesday, August 26, 2025.

According to the lawsuit, Abronye claimed live that when Dr. Abbey meets with farmers, he transports his own chair from Accra to cocoa estates. Additionally, he charged that the COCOBOD head purposefully replaced the organization’s finance director in order to embezzle money intended for cocoa growers.

Dr. Abbey denied the claims, calling them unfounded and an intentional effort to damage his reputation in the industry.

“With full knowledge that such falsehoods would cause irreparable damage to his personal dignity and reputation, the defendant’s statements were made with the intention of eroding the trust and confidence the public has in the plaintiff,” the writ said.

In addition to financial restitution, Dr. Abbey is requesting that the court order Abronye to withdraw any defamatory statements from public use and provide an unconditional retraction and public apology. Additionally, he is requesting a permanent injunction to stop Abronye or any individuals working on his behalf from releasing any more disparaging remarks about him.
