Robert Nesta Marley, better known as Bob Marley, was a singer, guitarist, and songwriter from Jamaica.

Bob Marley, who was born in Nine Mile, Jamaica, on February 6, 1945, began his professional musical career in 1963 when he and Bunny Wailer founded the Teenagers, a group that later went by the name of the Wailers.

The Wailers’ debut studio album, The Wailing Wailers, which featured their worldwide smash single “One Love,” was released in 1965. After the group split up, Bob Marley continued to perform under the band’s name and achieved international success with the release of a live recording of “No Woman, No Cry.”

Bob Marley’s breakthrough album in the US, Rastaman Vibration, followed and peaked at number 50 on the Billboard Soul Charts. A few months after the album came out, someone tried to kill him at his house in Jamaica. This made him decide to move to London for good.

In 1981, Bob Marley passed away at the age of 36. His musical career was distinguished by the blending of elements of rocksteady, ska, and reggae as well as his unique voice and compositional style. He was regarded as one of the pioneers of reggae.

Bob Marley contributions to music elevated Jamaican music’s profile internationally and cemented his place in modern popular culture. During the time he was active, he became a Rastafari icon and added a spiritual element to his music.

Bob Marley was controversial for his open support for democratic social reforms and is also regarded as a global emblem of Jamaican music, culture, and identity. Additionally, he promoted pan-Africanism and legalized marijuana.
