Bayern Munich, after a stunning comeback on Saturday to win the Bundesliga title, announced that they have parted ways with CEO Oliver Kahn and sports director Hasan Salihamidzic. The news was confirmed by the club.
Jan-Christian Dreesen, who is now serving as the board’s vice chairman, will succeed Kahn as chairman. The person who will succeed Salihamidzic has not been chosen yet.
Kahn, who played for Bayern and Germany throughout his legendary playing career as one of the all-time best goalkeepers, was named to the board of directors of FC Bayern Munchen AG on January 1, 2020.
The following summer, he succeeded Karl-Heinz Rummenigge as CEO of the club, which he had played for during his playing career. During that time period, the record champions won three crowns in the Bundesliga, one in the UEFA Champions League, one in the UEFA Super Cup, and one in the German Supercup.
Bayern confirm that Oliver Kahn and Hasan Salihamidžić are sacked with immediate effect
“The decision to part ways with Oliver Kahn was anything but an easy one for the supervisory board,” stated Herbert Hainer, chairman of Bayern. “Notwithstanding, as a result of the overall evolution, we have arrived at the conclusion that it is time to make a new appointment at the top of the executive board.
We would like to express our gratitude to Oliver Kahn for his dedication, his ideas, and everything that the both of us have been able to accomplish together. At FC Bayern, he will forever be remembered as a significant character. We hope that the future holds nothing but success for him.
Since February 2013, Dreesen has been a member of the FC Bayern board of directors, and he has held the position of vice chairman since February 2014. Dreesen comes from a career in corporate banking.
The newly appointed Chief Executive Officer of Bayern stated, “First and foremost, I would like to thank our supervisory board for the trust they have placed in me.”
“In all honesty, I had other things planned for my life, but when FC Bayern called, I had no choice but to drop everything and take the job.” For as long as I can remember, this club has been close to my heart, and I am well aware of the potential for good that it possesses.
“I am looking forward to the new challenge, and I will continue to put 100 percent of my effort into being successful with FC Bayern in all aspects of the game. Those who know me well are aware of how significant the club, its members, and our supporters are to me.
Salihamidzic, who had been Kahn’s teammate in the past, had been serving in the capacity of sporting director since 2017. He was in charge of overseeing the signing of players like Benjamin Pavard and Alphonso Davies, among others.
Thomas Tuchel has revealed that the information was not disclosed to the players until after Bayern Munich had won their 11th consecutive Bundesliga championship on the final day of the 2022–23 season, edging out Borussia Dortmund on goal difference to become champions.
