Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has announced that beginning December 1, 2024, the government will provide free dialysis therapy to all kidney patients covered by the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
During a stakeholder meeting in the Old Tafo Pankrono Constituency, Dr. Bawumia reaffirmed the government’s commitment to assisting patients in need through the NHIS. The new free dialysis policy builds on a successful trial program for patients over 60 and under 18 that began earlier this year.
“The NHIS was failing. We revived it with a large investment. Dr. Bawumia noted that childhood cancer and sickle cell disease are now included.
He went on to say, “Also, renal dialysis has gotten expensive, and many patients are unable to afford it. Six months ago, we launched a trial program for patients over the age of 60 and those under 18. We are finally completing the flying process.”
“From December 1, all patients will receive free treatment under the NHIS,” the politician stated.
Under the new policy, registered kidney patients under the NHIS would be eligible for free dialysis therapy, reducing the financial strain on patients and their families, who frequently struggle to finance the pricey procedure.
“Dialysis has become expensive, and this new policy will help reduce the burden on families,” he claimed.
The Vice President is now on a 15-day tour of the Ashanti Region to gather support for the December 7 presidential and parliamentary elections.
