Vacant seats controversy: Bagbin to address media today

Today, Ghana’s Speaker, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, will address the media about recent developments in Parliament.

According to a news release published by Parliament’s Public Affairs sub-division, the Speaker will also address broader concerns related to Ghana’s democratic growth.

“This engagement aims to provide an opportunity for the media to discuss critical issues affecting Ghana’s parliamentary democracy, including recent events that have led to significant political developments,” according to a release dated November 5.

It continued: “The address will take place on Wednesday, 6th November 2024 at 2:00 pm, at the Justice D.F. Annan Auditorium, Job 600, Parliament House.”

Mr Bagbin adjourned the House indefinitely on October 17, therefore Parliament is now not session. This came after he declared four seats vacant, a decision that the Supreme Court has subsequently instructed him not to implement.

Speaker Bagbin’s lawyers attempted to have the Supreme Court retract its ruling, but the application was dismissed.

ell-meaning stakeholders have urged the judiciary and legislature to work together to address what many have termed as a constitutional stalemate.

Meanwhile, parliament is slated to reconvene on November 7, 2024.
