The Speaker of Parliament has issued a communiqué summoning Members of Parliament to meet on Thursday, November 7, as stipulated in the notice handed out on Thursday, October 31.

According to the Speaker, the recall is made following Article 112 (3) of Ghana’s Constitution and Standing Orders 5 and 53, which allow the Speaker to convene Parliament as needed in the public interest.

The session will begin at 10 a.m. at the Accra International Conference Centre, the temporary location for Parliamentary sittings while the main House is being renovated.

Although particular agenda items have not been released, the recall implies that urgent national issues may be under consideration.

Members are scheduled to arrive in Accra immediately to address pressing national issues.

This statement comes after Speaker Alban Bagbin adjourned parliamentary proceedings indefinitely on Tuesday, October 22, following a tense day in the chamber.

Tensions were high as Members of Parliament from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) argued about which caucus had the majority.

Alban Bagbin also cited a communication from the Supreme Court, which directed him to stay his previous ruling, which declared four parliamentary seats empty.

On Wednesday, October 30, the Supreme Court dismissed the Speaker’s stay plea, upholding its previous directive.
