Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has urged the opposition New Patriotic Party to adopt what he calls “universal membership suffrage” to avoid additional internal party problems.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has planned its presidential primary for Saturday, January 31, 2026.

This early primary has been a source of disagreement among party members, with some questioning the leadership’s choice.

Addressing the new development in the NPP, Asiedu Nketia, often known as General Mosquito, urged the party against holding an early primary, citing the possibility of misunderstanding.

What happens if the mandates of regional and district executives expire before the presidential election? It means that the party will face a situation in which the delegates who vote do not have a legitimate mandate to nominate a flagbearer. In an interview with Nana Yaw Kesseh on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’ morning show, he paraphrased: “If care is not taken and this happens, it will deepen the cracks in the party.”

He explained his universal membership suffrage notion, which he believes is a solution, by stating that it allows all NPP members to elect their flagbearer.

He believes that if the party wants stability, it is better to employ this strategy rather than forcing a few people to participate in the election.

General Mosquito also encouraged the party to exercise caution, noting that this “top-bottom approach” may end in the NPP becoming what he termed as a “command party,” which is “undemocratic.”

He explained that if the party initially selects a flagbearer, the flagbearer will assemble a team of executives under his authority, which will not bode well for the NPP.

“The disagreements and agreements all matter to the success of a party,” he said, as paraphrased.

Asiedu Nketia appeared on ‘Kokrokoo’ for the first time after years of boycotting the show, to officially declare the NDC’s return.
