Ghana’s long-standing dominance at the Baba Yara Stadium was disrupted by a 1-0 loss to Angola on Thursday, resulting in a disappointing day in Kumasi.
Since February 2000, the Black Stars had maintained an undefeated record in the Ashanti Regional capital, Kumasi, while numerous top-tier teams suffered defeats.
In contrast, Angola achieved an extraordinary victory that ended Ghana’s remarkable run and dealt a significant setback to the Black Stars’ 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
Although the result will dominate headlines, the dismal pitch condition was a significant concern. The surface was in such deplorable condition that both teams were unable to perform at their optimal level, which cast a shadow over the majority of the match.
Abdul Mumin, the Rayo Vallecano defender, committed a costly error in the 93rd minute, allowing Angola to secure the victory. Mumin’s inability to effectively clear a cross resulted in substitute Milson scoring the game-winning goal.
Ghana’s delight was mirrored in the Angolan celebrations when the two sides last met at the same venue, where the Black Stars emerged victorious with a late goal. This time, Angola gained their revenge.
Angola ends Ghana’s unbeaten Baba Yara Stadium
Ghana, as anticipated, maintained possession; however, they made fewer attempts at goal than Angola, who had six. Their final attempt was successful.
In the second half, Jordan Ayew was presented with a significant opportunity; however, his shot was denied. Mohammed Kudus’ goal-bound attempt was deflected wide.
Antoine Semenyo, despite his impressive Premier League performance, was unable to enter the game, and Leicester City winger Fatawu Issahaku encountered an abundance of the ball but encountered difficulty with decision-making.
Angola’s victory was not wholly unexpected, despite the fact that Ghana may have deserved at least a point. They implemented their strategy flawlessly.
Otto Addo’s team will now concentrate on their forthcoming match against Niger, which is scheduled to take place in Morocco. Meanwhile, Angola will face the leaders, Sudan.
