Alan Kyerematen, the founder and flagbearer of the Movement for Change, has criticized former President John Agyekum Kufuor for his recent endorsement of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer for the 2024 general elections.
In an interview with selected media on Sunday, November 17, former President Kufuor urged Ghanaians to vote for Dr Bawumia in the December elections, calling him as the best qualified candidate to govern the country.
The former President emphasized that, given the current global situation, he feels Bawumia’s leadership may considerably boost Ghana’s economy.
“Considering the present global context, I genuinely believe that Ghana’s economy would witness substantial growth if Bawumia were elected as President,” Kufuor told the crowd. “With divine guidance, he is more than capable of fulfilling this promise, and I urge you to back his candidacy.”
“I have observed his remarkable economic skills during my presidency when he was an essential part of the Bank of Ghana’s team under Governor Dr Paul Acquah, helping to stabilise the national currency.”
Alan Kyerematen slams prez kufuor
In response to Mr Kufuor’s statements, Alan Kyerematen expressed his displeasure, arguing that the former president’s endorsement undermines the impartiality required of a statesman of Kufuor’s reputation.
Speaking on Oyerepa TV on Monday, November 18, Mr Kyerematen suggested that Kufuor’s actions could taint his long-standing political legacy.
“Kufuor is my uncle, and I’m hesitant to publicly criticize him,” Kyerematen stated. “However, his endorsement has thrown a long shadow over his political career. Have you seen how his words elicited unfavorable reactions and criticism from the public?”
Alan went on to express his concern about Kufuor’s involvement in active politics at this time, suggesting that it could damage the respect he commands throughout the country.
“He has long been a respected person in Ghana, so why would he chose to participate in partisan politics in this manner? “His actions are regrettable, and he is heading into dangerous territory,” he continued.
Despite his familial ties to Kufuor, Alan did not shy away from mentioning that the endorsement has already sparked resentment.
He asked the former president to reconsider his position, saying Kufuor “knows exactly what he is doing.”
After leaving the NPP to lead his newly founded Movement for Change, Kyerematen has positioned himself as a viable alternative to both the NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the approaching elections.
