Accra, Cape Coast roads blocked as US Vice President visits Ghana; check out affected areas

In preparation for the official state visit of H.E. Kamala Harris, Vice President of the United States of America (USA), the Ghana Police Service has announced a new arrangement for the management of traffic that is induced by security concerns.

The installation of roadblocks in certain areas of Accra and Cape Coast will continue throughout the course of the next week, from March 26 to March 29, 2023.

A schedule of traffic arrangement can be found in the following issued by the Police Service:

A. Arrangements for Traffic on Sunday, March 26, 2023, Within the City of Accra

There will be random roadblocks along the liberation road from the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) traffic intersection all the way up to the National Theatre between the hours of midday and nine o'clock at night.

B. Monday, March 27, 2023, Arrangements for Traffic in the City of Accra

From the National Theatre, through the AU Roundabout, to the Jubilee House, and from the Jubilee House to the area around the Emmanuel Eye Clinic in Shiashie, there will be intermittent roadblocks between the hours of 9:00 am and 9:00 pm. These roadblocks will be in place from the National Theatre.

In addition, there will be sporadic roadblocks beginning at the Ako Adjei Interchange and continuing all the way to the region around the Labone Secondary School, as well as along the John Evans Atta Mills High Street, and finally arriving at the Bukom Boxing Arena.

C. Parking and Transportation Arrangements for Tuesday, March 28, 2023. The Greater Accra Region and Cape Coast

From the National Theatre all the way through the Ministries Traffic Intersection and all the way up to the Castle Traffic Light at the Black Star Square, there will be intermittent roadblocks in the Accra area between the hours of 9:00 am and 12:00 pm.

From the Robert Mensah Sports Stadium in Cape Coast all the way through Bakano Road and Aminstimadzi Road to the Omanhene's Palace, as well as from the Omanhene's Palace all the way through Beach Road to the Cape Coast Castle, there will be intermittent roadblocks between the hours of midday and six in the evening.

D. Wednesday, March 29, 2023, Arrangements for Traffic Within Accra

From the National Theatre to the area around Pawpaw Street in East Legon, there will be sporadic roadblocks erected between the hours of 8:00 am and 5:00 pm on the Liberation Road. From the National Theatre to the Jubilee House and then along the Liberation Road, these roadblocks will be set up.

As a result of the aforementioned traffic arrangements, motorists are being kindly asked to cooperate with the Police and advised to use alternative routes wherever possible.

This is to ensure effective traffic management as we demonstrate our hospitable camaraderie toward the guests in accordance with our tradition and culture.

We would also like to point out that police officers will be stationed at various vantage points and along the roads that were mentioned in order to assist the general public throughout the entirety of this time period.
