Following a contentious conversation over bribery claims that created uproar earlier this week, Kwame Asare-Obeng, often known as A Plus, the Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, apologised to Dr. Dominic Ayine, the Attorney General and MP for Bolgatanga East.
A Plus acknowledged writing a highly worded post accusing Dr. Ayine of trying to bribe the Appointments Committee of Parliament with GH₵500,000 in a statement posted on his official Facebook page. The now-deleted tweet, which received a lot of backlash for its harsh language, called the Attorney General a “stupid man,” a “old fool,” and someone who “I’ll reset your brain.“
A Plus has taken back his previous remarks in response to criticism from the public and demands for a more civil conversation, admitting that his word choice was improper and fell short of the decorum that a lawmaker should have.
I acknowledge that I was the author of the Facebook post that I made in reaction to the Attorney General’s remarks during the press conference. After giving it some thought, I admit that my tone and word choice were improper,” he said.
He sincerely apologised to Dr. Ayine, calling him a respected senior colleague, and he also apologised to the Ghanaian public for the content of his comments.
I genuinely apologise to Hon. Dr. Ayine and the public as a Member of Parliament, a junior member of the House, and a younger colleague. I think I could have presented my argument in a more considerate and helpful way.
In an unusual step, A Plus announced that he has removed the controversial message from his social media profile, describing it as a statement of respect and regret. He also stressed that he accepts full responsibility for his conduct.
In spite of the apology, the MP for Gomoa Central reiterated his dedication to combating corruption, which is a key component of the opposition National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) platform, and urged cooperation and respect among all parties while tackling matters of national importance.
For His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama and the whole NDC government, combating corruption continues to be a top concern. We must all approach this endeavour with honesty, equity, and respect for one another,” he continued.
In his closing remarks, he urged all parties involved to proceed in unity and sincerity, driven by the welfare of the Ghanaian people and the country’s interests.
