A three-day protest in Accra will begin today, Thursday, October 3, as campaigners demand the immediate release of 53 Democracy Hub demonstrators arrested after an anti-galamsey demonstration last week.
The demonstration, which will last until October 5, intends to highlight the continued environmental damage caused by illicit mining, often known as galamsey.
The protest march will begin at Legon Okponglo and continue to Black Star Square, with participants following a police-approved path.

The authorized path passes via significant landmarks such as the Legon Stadium, Okponglo Traffic Light, Shiashie, Shangri-La, and Airport Traffic Light, before continuing to the National Service Secretariat, Electoral Commission Office, Parliament, and Independence Square.
The protest, organized under the banners “FreeTheCitizens” and “SayNoToGalamsey,” has acquired significant traction on social media, with thousands anticipated to take part.
The activists intend to raise attention not just to the arrest of their fellow demonstrators, but also to the ongoing fight against illicit mining, which is destroying Ghana’s environment.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has issued a warning, indicating that they will disperse any gatherings if there are reasonable grounds to believe that the demonstration will result in a breach of peace during the event.
