A coalition of 220 former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) who served under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration from 2017 to 2024 has announced its full support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s flagbearer in the 2028 general elections.

On Monday, June 23, the Forum of Former MMDCEs for Dr. Bawumia held a press conference at the Alisa Hotel in Accra to proclaim their “strong, unshaken endorsement” of the former Vice President. Their backing comes ahead of the party’s internal elections, which are scheduled for January 31, 2026.

The forum highlighted its support as more than just symbolic, emphasising that it is a practical commitment of time, resources, and political will to help ensure Dr. Bawumia’s candidature and eventual success.

According to the group, following comprehensive talks with all aspirants and a thorough assessment of their ability and vision, they concluded that Dr. Bawumia was the best candidate for both the party and the country.

“Our endorsement is more than just a sign; it is a strategic and operational commitment. With 95% of us having previously served as Constituency and Regional Executives—some for more than 16 years—we have a deep awareness of the NPP’s structures, dynamics, and electoral demands. We will use this expertise to ensure Dr. Bawumia’s message reaches every corner of Ghana,” they stated.

They complimented Dr. Bawumia for his established track record in public service, particularly his leadership in Ghana’s digital transformation, which included the introduction of the Ghana Card, mobile money interoperability, and the paperless ports system. These, they claimed, had increased efficiency and formalised vital economic sectors.

The forum also praised Dr. Bawumia’s inclusive leadership style, describing him as approachable, humble, and a unifier who works with all factions of the party. They stated that his popularity among grassroots, youth, and floating voters provides the NPP with a significant advantage in the upcoming national elections.

They contended that Dr. Bawumia’s broad popularity and vast awareness, built during the 2024 campaign, make him the party’s best candidate for the president in 2028.

According to them, electoral statistics reveals that starting the campaign with a well-known candidate, such as Dr. Bawumia, gives the NPP a huge advantage over fielding a fresh candidate with no established base.

The former MMDCEs described Dr. Bawumia as a leader who combines continuity and innovation, capable of maintaining Ghana’s development successes while proposing new ideas for national progress.

They also promised to engage their grassroots networks in all 16 regions of the country to back his campaign.

“We, the former MMDCEs, are not simply endorsing; we are engaging our networks. We will mobilise the grassroots in all 16 regions, leveraging our deep-rooted relationships. Engage in door-to-door initiatives to spread Dr. Bawumia’s vision. Counteract falsehoods with facts about his accomplishments and future. Fundraise and provide logistical support for the campaign.”
