The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has issued a warning about the possibility of cancelling some papers from the just concluded 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination.
According to the Council, this is due to alleged malpractices discovered at various examination centres across the country.
John Kapi, WAEC’s Head of Public Relations, stated this on Adom TV’s The Big Agenda programme.
He added that 25 people had been apprehended by the police for various types of examination misconduct.
“This year’s number is considerable, especially given the level of those claimed to have engaged in misbehaviour.”They include supervisors, headmasters, teachers, and invigilators,” Mr. Kapi explained.
He went on to clarify that some of the jailed people sought to answer questions for candidates, while others photographed the questions and transmitted them to people outside to solve.
“In some instances, we arrested people who had photos of the questions on their phones, while others had answers stored, ready to be passed to candidates,” according to him.
Mr. Kapi emphasised that all of these cases are being investigated, and anyone found guilty will face the full extent of the law.
He also stated that the Council had viewed a viral video of a candidate applauding invigilators for supposedly assisting them with some of the questions. He also stated that WAEC is looking into the situation and will take appropriate action if the inquiry supports the claim.
When host Kwasi Nsiah enquired whether there will be any cancellations this year, Mr. Kapi responded:
“Yes, because there have been several instances of alleged cheating. Any paper in which our investigations reveal wrongdoing would be cancelled,” he emphasised.
