The NFL trade deadline expired on Halloween at 4:00 p.m. ET. As usual, the trade rumours circulated ahead of the deadline contained more tricks than sweets.

Trade rumours frequently included players like Chase Young, Jerry Jeudy, Derrick Henry, and Saquon Barkley, but Young was the only one who was actually traded. In the 24 hours before the trade deadline, eight trades were finalised, but only a few notable players—Young, Montez Sweat, Josh Dobbs, and Leonard Williams—were traded.

The NFL trade deadline is different from other sports’ deadlines, in fact. Superstars frequently switch teams in the middle of the season as teams prepare for postseason runs or go on rebuilds in the MLB and NBA. That’s far less common in the NFL because of the length of the season and the frequency of injuries, which make teams less willing to part up long-term assets (draft selections) for short-term leases.

Therefore, even though Tuesday was a fairly busy day for the NFL, it was still nothing compared to the spectacular deals that fans in other leagues are used to seeing. Nevertheless, there were enough thrills to keep fans interested all day on Halloween.

The most significant transactions that took place prior to the 2023 NFL trade deadline are shown here, along with ratings for each team’s performance in the exchange.

Seattle Seahawks Acquire DT Leonard Williams from New York Giants

Who else is involved: The Giants will receive a 2024 second-round pick and a 2025 fifth-round pick from the Seahawks.

Seattle is bolstering its defense after moving into first place in the NFC West. Williams is considered one of the league’s top interior defensive linemen and signed a lucrative contract in the offseason.

Atlanta Falcons Acquire DL Kentavius Street from Philadelphia Eagles

Key stats: Street has recorded four total tackles while playing just 17% of the Eagles’ defensive snaps across eight games.

Who else is involved: Philly is sending a 2025 seventh-round pick with Street and receiving a 2024 sixth-round pick.

Why it matters: The Falcons lost defensive tackle Grady Jarrett to a season-ending knee injury, and Street provides familiar and affordable depth. He played under Falcons defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen last season, making him a valuable addition.
