A powerful 5.4-magnitude earthquake shook Jamaica, forcing residents to flee their buildings.
The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 6 miles, just 2 miles west-northwest of Hope Bay. Thankfully, no major damage or injuries were reported right away.
Earthquake in Jamaica: 5.4 magnitude trembler reported
Panic struck the island as a result of the earthquake, even stopping an International Seabed Authority meeting. Watchers witnessed attendees running away on video prior to a brief interruption of the programme. Later, to recuperate from the shock, they got together again in the late afternoon.
There was some structure damage as a result of the tremor, which also sent objects flying off grocery store shelves. While there are several little earthquakes in Jamaica every year, major ones are rare.
Seismic historical events such as the Port Royal earthquake of 1692 and the Kingston earthquake of 1907 serve as a reminder of the region’s seismic past.
