1 dead, 7 injured in galamsey site shooting

One woman was killed in a terrible incident that occurred at an illegal mining (galamsey) site in Nyameadom, Ashanti Region.

JoyNews reports that a local security group member working for Chinese miners fired into a mining pit, causing the disaster.

According to reports, the guard tried to scatter the women by firing a warning shot while they were working in the pit in the hopes of discovering remaining gold. Unfortunately, one person was killed and seven others were injured when the shot went away.

An illegal miners’ excavator was set on fire by irate villagers as a result of the incident. Five of the injured remained at the Mankranso Government Hospital after being transported to hospitals for treatment; two were referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

Kwame Sefa Kayi warns of guns at galamsey sites

Kwami Sefa Kayi warned that if the illegal mining threat destroying the environment is not stopped right now, the nation could end up producing rebels.

He claims that many of the galamsey sites use firearms, endangering national security.

“Are you aware of my fear? Are you aware that we are building an armed rebel force? We’re turning this into a rebellion (galamsey). Assuming that there are roughly 400 individuals with 100 firearms, these galamseyers are armed. By the time we realize it, they have gradually transformed into what is referred to as a “ragtag army,” which consists of soldiers who are equipped and proficient with weapons but lack adequate training.

In the meantime, some organizations and individuals are becoming increasingly concerned about galamsey activities and their detrimental effects on the environment.

In recent weeks, rallies have been held by both religious and pressure groups to urge the government to outlaw galamsey. Ghanaians, however, have yet to witness any official action.
