A Texas man was surprised to learn that he had been legally married to his former fiancée without his consent or attendance at a wedding ceremony.
In a peculiar and unnerving turn of events, the 42-year-old man—whose identity has not been published—stated that he was in a serious relationship with Kristin Marie Spearman, 36.
At one time, the pair went to the Wayne County Clerk’s Office to get their marriage licence. However, the romance dissolved before they could exchange vows.
After an altercation, the man informed the woman that he no longer wanted to continue the relationship. However, his ex-fiancée looked to have had other plans.
Earlier this month, only days after the breakup, the man received a Bath & Body Works gift bag. To his amazement, it included not only numerous things but also an officiated marriage certificate dated June 13th. The document included both his and Spearman’s names, as well as a photo of Spearman clutching the formal documents verifying their legal union.
According to the McLennan County website, both couples must attend in person with appropriate identification to apply for a marriage licence.
However, in this particular case, the woman allegedly had a local church certify the marriage without the groom’s presence. She then reportedly submitted the signed marriage certificate to her county clerk’s office.
Beverly Hills Police Chief Kory Martin told FOX 44, “I don’t think in 23 years I’ve ever heard of anyone getting married to someone who wasn’t present for the ceremony.”
He went on to say, “I spoke with the victim, and he is going through a considerable procedure to attempt to resolve this. So that’s a whole new problem — not only do you have the concern of ‘What does that imply for my safety and property?’, which is a big conversation in this, but also, ‘What do I have to do to solve it?'”
Meanwhile, Kristin Marie Spearman was arrested and charged with third-degree felony stalking.
