President John Mahama’s decision to suspend Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo enraged the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The party claims that the suspension is an assault on Ghana’s democracy and the judiciary as a whole, in addition to being a personal slight against the Chief Justice.

The National Organiser of the NPP, Henry Nana Boakye, also referred to as Nana B, said the party will not take the President’s decision lightly during the party’s Thank You Tour on Wednesday, April 23.

In response to what they say is an unconstitutional attack on the judiciary, he said, the NPP intends to launch a statewide demonstration.

“Both our democracy and our courts are under attack. Do not believe that Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo is the target of this attack. No. It is the judiciary as a whole.

“We (NPP) will likely demonstrate in large numbers. We won’t sit down peacefully; we’ll be agitated. He declared, “This is unconstitutional.”

His remarks follow President John Mahama’s suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo after a committee was formed to look into petitions against her.

Following discussions with the Council of State, the Presidency released a statement announcing the action, which complies with constitutional norms.

The President referred to Article 146(6) of the Constitution, which requires that if a prima facie case is produced against a superior court judge, a committee be formed to investigate the charges.

The statement claims that President Mahama decided there are enough reasons to justify more investigation.
