According to reports, Adidja Palmer, better known by his stage names Vybz Kartel and Worl Boss, is preparing a huge concert in Accra this December. This might be his first significant performance on the African continent.
The dancehall veteran has reportedly made preliminary enquiries over the availability of the Accra Sports Stadium, a 40,000-seat arena that has already played host to local music heavyweights like Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy, according to Ghanaian sports commentator Gary Al-Smith.
If verified, the performance would rank among the largest international gatherings to occur in Ghana this year.
The declaration comes after a string of joint ventures between Vybz Kartel and Shatta Wale, Ghana’s own dancehall mogul.
Following the Jamaican star’s release from prison, Shatta Wale was scheduled to play at Vybz Kartel’s eagerly awaited homecoming performance in December of last year.
After Jamaica’s Court of Appeal reversed Kartel’s murder conviction and rejected a retrial, he was released from prison after serving 13 years.
The 35,000-seat National Stadium in Jamaica hosted his first post-prison performance, which was dubbed a “worldwide dancehall revival.”
Shatta Wale delighted audiences with a variety of his great songs, including his worldwide collaboration with Beyoncé on Already, during the spectacular event.
Following his performance, Shatta Wale was publically recognised by Vybz Kartel, who crowned him the King of African Dancehall.
Internationally recognised performers like Popcaan and Skillibeng, who have both worked with American megastars like Nicki Minaj and DJ Khaled, have performed at previous Kartel events.
According to industry sources, the Ghana event might feature a similarly well-known lineup, enhancing Accra’s already rising reputation as a major music destination worldwide.
If all goes according to plan, Vybz Kartel’s performance in Ghana in December is sure to be one of the most unforgettable evenings on the nation’s music calendar.
