After two days, doctors at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) have decided to end their walkout after Yaa Naa Abukari II, the Overlord of Dagbon, intervened.
On Friday, April 25, the Yaa Naa sent a high-level delegation headed by Zangbalun Naa Dr. Yakubu II, Chief of the Zangbalun Traditional Area, who met with the hospital’s administration and officials from the Doctors Association of Tamale Teaching Hospital (DATTH).
The referral facility, which serves the northern area, reopened its emergency services after this conference.
Myjoyonline.com has learnt that before the physicians can fully resume their work to provide medical services at the Outpatients Department, they still want Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh to apologise.
Citing an unfriendly workplace, a shortage of essential medical supplies, and what they said an insult to their dignity from high-ranking government officials, the doctors had put down their instruments.
The strike started when the minister fired Dr Adam Atiku, the CEO of TTH, for suspected medical malpractice and poor management that resulted in a hospital patient’s death.
In addition to evaluating the facility’s current condition, the minister’s visit was designed to obtain firsthand information about the alleged carelessness that led to the death of a patient who had been referred to the hospital weeks prior.
After being transported to the red zone of the Emergency Ward while unconscious, the dead, Bavug Salim, was allegedly left alone for several hours without cause, which ultimately resulted in his death.
Dr. Valentine Akwulpwa, a medical officer on the visit, made an effort to explain the circumstances of the death, but the minister felt that the explanation was inadequate.
Additionally, the CEO was fired as a result of the minister’s criticism of the hospital’s general state and resource management.
