Some traders in Adum, Kumasi, are blaming the current fire outbreak in the core business district on regular power outages in the area, which they believe may have fuelled the fire.

The fire, which broke out in the early hours of Friday, March 21, destroyed multiple shops housed in two-story buildings in the busy commercial zone.

The fire at the popular Blue Light venue, near Hello FM, began at 6 a.m. and spread quickly as firefighters struggled to contain it.

While the Ghana National Fire Service is currently investigating the exact origin of the fire, traders believe that recurring power shortages in the region contributed to the blaze.

According to the traders, the frequent power outages have harmed appliances.

Several of the affected shop owners claimed electrical equipment concerns as a result of the area’s inconsistent power supply.

“You have no mercy for the youth at all. We’ve been experiencing power outages for weeks, and every time the power comes back on, the surge causes some of our appliances to malfunction,” claimed one local shopkeeper.

According to eyewitnesses, the fire began when a nearby electricity pole flickered, resulting in a spark on the top floor of one of the buildings.
