The Sports Ministry has given the Ghana Football Association (GFA) instructions to request that CAF inspect the University of Ghana Stadium and the Accra Sports Stadium in preparation for the possibility of sanctioning these venues as the venues for the Black Stars’ upcoming home game.
After CAF withdrew its approval for the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, Sports Ministry presently lacks a stadium that satisfies the criteria for hosting Category 3 international matches.
Following the Black Stars’ 2025 AFCON qualifier against Angola last Thursday, the Baba Yara Stadium’s deplorable condition was once again the subject of public scrutiny.
The Baba Yara Stadium was conditionally approved by CAF to host the AFCON qualifier; however, the organization subsequently revoked its approval due to the absence of any improvements.
Ghana’s Sports Ministry statement, which stated that the continent’s football governing body deemed the playing field unsuitable for international matches, confirmed this.

The Sports Ministry has also issued a statement in response to this, instructing the National Sports Authority (NSA) to guarantee that the pitch is repaired.

“The Minister has directed the National Sports Authority (NSA) to take steps to resolve issues with the pitch and further instructed the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to immediately request CAF to inspect the Accra Sports Stadium and the newly-built University of Ghana Stadium, for approval as Category 3 match venues, for use by the Black Stars in its next international match in October,” the statement reads.
“Most issues identified by CAF at the Accra Sports Stadium during a previous inspection have been resolved; while the University of Ghana Stadium has already hosted CAF Category 2 matches, but the stadium, since inauguration, is yet to be inspected by CAF’s independent inspectors for consideration as a suitable category 3 match venue, in accordance with CAF’s Stadium Regulations.
“The Ministry of Youth and Sports is confident that the University of Ghana and Accra Sports Stadia will meet the requirements for CAF’s Category 3 matches after the inspection, and again reiterate its commitment to upgrading the remaining national stadia to meet the standards required for CAF Category 3 matches.”
In the interim, the Black Stars are contemplating the possibility of playing their home match against Sudan outside of Ghana, particularly in light of the current state of disrepair at the University of Ghana Stadium and the Accra Sports Stadium.
