The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has detained dancehall artist Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr., also known as Shatta Wale, as part of an inquiry into the tax responsibilities of a yellow Lamborghini Urus.

According to a news release from his management, the musician willingly appeared at the EOCO headquarters on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, accompanied by his lawyer, Cephas Biyuo.

Shatta Wale’s management has encouraged his followers, known as the “SM Family,” to stay calm and avoid speculation, reassuring them that his legal team is actively working with authorities to achieve his release. The management and legal representatives are anticipated to return to the EOCO offices for further discussions.

This comes after a previous occurrence in early August 2025, when EOCO, in coordination with the FBI, seized the expensive automobile.

The confiscation was part of a bigger international investigation, with officials alleging that the car was stolen and linked to the revenues of a major fraud ring.

The seizure was carried out under Ghana’s Economic and Organised Crime Office Act, 2010 (Act 804) and the Mutual Legal Assistance Act, 2010 (Act 807).

The EOCO, a specialised organisation tasked with investigating and prosecuting economic and organised crime, has the authority to take property believed to represent the profits of a major offence.

This includes situations in where the original crime happened outside of Ghana, and the agency frequently works with international partners such as INTERPOL and the FBI.

The news of the automobile being seized and the subsequent detention of Shatta Wale has generated a whirlwind of conversation on social media, with many expressing concern about the artist’s plight.
