The Ministry of Education, in partnership with the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), has officially incorporated Savannah College of Education into the public college system.
In a press release, the Ministry called the decision as a watershed moment that demonstrates the government’s commitment to increasing access to quality teacher education and enhancing Ghana’s educational framework.
The decision was made after a rigorous examination and due diligence procedure, which confirmed that the school meets all of the conditions for transitioning from a private college to a fully recognised public college of education.
The absorption is projected to improve teacher education by increasing access, boosting training quality through state-funded facilities and faculty development, and promoting equality by directing resources to underserved communities.
The Ministry of Education praised GTEC, Traditional Authorities, and Savannah College of Education’s management for their efforts to ease the transition.
Stakeholders, including students and faculty, have been invited to embrace the transformation and help develop the university as a centre of excellence in teacher education.
According to the statement, the move is consistent with Ghana’s overall educational reform goal, which aims to develop a highly educated workforce of instructors.
The transition is contingent on the creation of a GTEC Governing Board.
