On Friday, August 8, 2025, there will be a 20% increase in public transport fares in Ghana.
The Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), in partnership with transport unions, issued this instruction in compliance with the Administrative Arrangement on Public Transport Fares.
According to a statement signed by Emmanuel Ohene-Yeboah, General Secretary, and Alhaji Tanko, Acting National Chairman of the Council, the change was forced by three critical developments that have imposed considerable costs on transport companies.
First, the operators claim that the cost of spare parts and other goods and services has not decreased as a result of the previous 15% fee reduction, which was enacted on May 21, 2025.
Second, a newly introduced GH¢1.00 per litre fuel fee has driven fuel prices up by around 8%. This immediately impacts operational costs for drivers and transport businesses.
Lastly, deteriorating road conditions nationwide have escalated maintenance costs, intensifying the financial strain on operators.
All public transport modes, including shared taxis, intra-city “trotro” services, long-distance intercity transit, and haulage, will be subject to the 20% increase.
The announcement mandates that all commercial transport operators and companies adhere to the new fares and prominently display them at their loading terminals.
The Council is calling to passengers, transport operators and the general public to work together to ensure that the revised rates are implemented smoothly.
Background
The last ticket adjustment took place in May of this year, when fares were decreased due to changes in fuel pricing and government action.
However, the GRTCC asserts that the current economic conditions and deteriorating road infrastructure have forced operators to reevaluate the fare structure.
