Otto Addo, the Black Stars’ head coach, has announced that Benjamin Asare is Ghana’s first-choice goalkeeper after strong performances in training and World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar.

The Hearts of Oak shot-stopper kept two clean sheets in his first two outings as a national team goalie.

Speaking after Ghana’s 3-0 victory over Madagascar in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifications, Addo indicated that, despite the next game is months away, Asare remains the choice goalkeeper.

“At this point, the next game is in June, but I believe he [Benjamin Asare] is number one. We’ve settled on him. “He performed well in training,” Addo stated.

However, the coach stressed that competition among goalkeepers remains fierce, with Lawrence Ati Zigi and Joe Wollacott vying for a starting berth.

“Like I stated, there isn’t a tremendous difference between him and the other goalkeepers. We have a nice situation where the goalkeepers are pushing each other, and we are very grateful for the way Ati Zigi and Wollacott behaved this week, as well as the way they attempted to push Benjamin—to help him and support him—which is not something I take for granted,” he said.

Addo lauded Asare’s work ethic and performances in both league matches and training, underlining his well-deserved promotion to the top slot.

“Big compliments to them for pushing him… this is excellent cooperation. Benjamin deserves it. He performed admirably in both the league and the few training sessions we had; I am delighted for him,” he continued.

As Ghana prepares to resume their qualification campaign in June, Asare’s position as the Black Stars’ number one will be eagerly watched in the coming months.
