The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has officially called off its nationwide strike, which began on June 9, 2025, due to the government’s refusal to enact improved terms of employment.

Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, President of the GRNMA, announced the suspension at a press briefing in Accra, emphasising the need for the government to demonstrate greater respect for the nursing profession and meet its members’ welfare requirements urgently.

The issue was centred on the government’s intention to postpone the implementation of newly negotiated service conditions until 2026, which the Association strongly rejected.

The walkout, which affected public healthcare facilities around the country, caused major interruptions in health services. Many hospitals reported less personnel, lengthier wait times, and delays in receiving critical care treatments. Emergency wards and maternity units were particularly badly struck.

Despite multiple rounds of conversation, including an emergency meeting on June 9 between the Ministry of Health, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, and GRNMA leadership, no immediate resolution was reached, forcing the Association to continue with the strike.

However, rising pressure from the public, patient advocacy groups, and important stakeholders in the health sector forced both parties to return to the bargaining table. The decision to postpone the strike reflects the government’s renewed commitment to revisiting the suggested implementation timeframe and improving continuing dialogue.

Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo stated that, while nurses and midwives will resume work, the Association would continue to constantly monitor developments.

The GRNMA has also urged government negotiators to approach the future rounds of talks with the seriousness they deserve, warning that failing to satisfy their requests in good faith could result in further action.
