Former Black Stars striker Asamoah Gyan has accused the outgoing New Patriotic Party (NPP) of using his popularity to get votes ahead of the 2024 national election.

Asamoah Gyan, who had been selected to oversee Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s “Youth and Sports” sub-committee, resigned just weeks before the election.

He stated his wish to focus on “humanitarian work” as the basis for his resignation, which came after a viral video of him arguing with an NPP official.

During a live Instagram session, Gyan accused the NPP of leveraging his celebrity to sway voters.

“They [NPP] used my popularity to get votes from the people,” he informed me.

The NPP candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, eventually lost the presidential election to John Dramani Mahama. Bawumia received 4,735,687 votes (41.40%), with Mahama receiving 6,499,082 votes (56.81%).
