The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), is currently putting the finishing touches on the list of individuals who will take part in the Special Delegates Conference on August 26, 2023.

The major responsibility of the delegates is to narrow the field of presidential hopefuls down to five individuals in advance of the congressional vote in November that will determine who will run for president in the elections of 2024.

NPP finalizes list for Special Delegates Congress

Justin Kodua Frimpong, the General Secretary of the NPP, recently gave an interview to JoyNews in which he stated the following: “If you go to Article 13, it states clearly that after vetting and we have more than five aspirants, then the party goes into what we refer to as the special delegates college to trim the number to five.”

“At this point, we are in the process of putting together the compilation. According to what I can recall off the top of my head, we are not going to go over a thousand, which means that the special electoral college will be comprised of between 900 and 1,000 delegates.

“When you talk about the founding members, some of them have passed away, so we have to take their names out, and again, we also have to look at prior national officers who have also passed away, so we are trying to organise those things.

When you talk about the founding members, some of them have died, so we have to take their names out. I am certain that we should have the final list for the election of special delegates in hand by this coming weekend,” he continued.

The NPP will make the names of the candidates who have met the requirements to run for office public on or before July 21, and voting will then take place on July 24, 2023.

On July 25, you will receive the very first notice of the poll. In the event that there are more than five suitable candidates, a special electoral college will be held on August 26, 2023, with the goal of narrowing the field down to five candidates.

The first vote among the last five candidates who meet the qualifications will be held on August 28, the final notice of poll will be issued on August 31, and the national congress will choose a flagbearer on November 4. In the event that there is a second round of voting, it will take place on November 11, 2023.
