The National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, says the party would petition Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II over allegations that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) is planning to rig the December 2024 elections.
Sammy Gyamfi claimed that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) intended to deploy Brigadier-General Micheal Opoku, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Ghana Armed Forces’ Central Command, to rig the election for the ruling party on December 7 by stuffing ballot boxes in the Ashanti Region.
The NDC stated that it had information that Brigadier-General Opoku’s mansion in Kumasi was now being used as a safe haven for the storage of weapons and election materials that the NPP intended to use to undermine voters’ will.

“Per our credible Intel, Brigadier-General Opoku’s residence in Kumasi is currently the storage facility for weapons, illegally-printed ballot papers, military apparels and other election materials, which the NPP intends to use to execute this dastardly and subversive agenda,” he told journalists.
Addressing media during a press conference held at the party’s headquarters in Accra on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, Sammy Gyamfi indicated that the party will send notice to the Asantehene, requesting his involvement in the claims.
According to him, the party is dedicated to holding a peaceful election; however, all players in the electoral process must ensure that the poll is conducted under close supervision.
Sammy Gyamfi stated, “We are going to ensure that the King of the Ashanti people, who is very interested in the peace of our nation and the peace of the processes leading up to, during, and after the December 7 election, is officially drawn to these developments because the headquarters of this guy’s operation [Brigadier General Michael Opoku] is Kumasi.”
“And I know that the Otumfuo cherishes the peace that the people of Kumasi and Ashanti region enjoy, and he will want to take an interest in this matter and call this guy to order.”
