More females living with HIV and AIDS in Bono Region – HIV Coordinator

The female population of Persons Living with HIV and AIDS (PLwHAs) in the Bono Region outnumbers the male population, according to Ghana Health Service (GHS) data.

As of September 2024, the region had 11,401 people living with HIV and AIDS, with 8,481 being female and 2,727 being male.

Mr. Emmanuel Obeng-Hinneh, the Bono Regional HIV Coordinator of the GHS, who revealed the data, also stated that all PLwHAs were currently receiving treatment.

He was addressing at a stakeholder gathering in Sunyani hosted by the Bono Regional office of the Ghana AIDS Commission’s Technical Support Unit (GAC) in partnership with the Bono Regional Coordinating Council.

The workshop sought to identify gaps and possibilities for strengthening the regional HIV response, as well as to provide a common forum for stakeholders to share ideas, identify issues, and develop long-term solutions to improve HIV prevention, treatment, and care.

Mr. Obeng-Hinneh also mentioned the Viral Load (VL) testing trend, indicating that 8,177 samples had been collected from the 9,791 clients eligible for testing, with 6,270 tests performed.

The VL testing coverage was 64%, with an 88 percent VL suppression rate, he stated.

Mr. Ahmed Ibrahim Bambilla, the GAC’s Bono, Bono East, and Ahafo Regional Technical Coordinator, urged stakeholders to continue supporting the Commission’s effective response to the region’s HIV trend.

He emphasized the GAC’s commitment to assisting NGOs in implementing HIV preventive measures and activities to help slow the spread of the illness.
