As champions of the Ghana Premier League Medeama SC prepare for their first CAF Champions League campaign, President Nana Akufo-Addo has promised to contribute a sum of GHC1 million to the team.

Prior to their first Champions League match, which is scheduled for later this month, the Tarkwa-based squad visited the president on Wednesday and gave him the Ghana Premier League trophy.

George Mireku Duker, Ghana’s Deputy Minister for Mines and Natural Resources, accompanied the champions to Jubilee House. There were also representatives from the management and technical teams, chiefs from the Apinto Traditional Council, Dr. Tony Aubynn, the club’s board chairman, head coach Evans Augustine Adotey, and others.

He made a pledge to the Yellow and Mauves after speaking with the president, signalling his willingness to give the money and his likelihood of being present when the club plays the Nigerian team Remo Stars on August 18 at the Cape Coast stadium.

He promised the club, “I will try to provide a million Ghana Cedis to help you in the CAF campaign.”

“The deputy minister is insisting that I come to Cape Coast if I am in Ghana on the 20th. I will check.

We will do our best.

After passing Aduana Stars in the final phases of the 2022–23 Ghana Premier League season, Medeama was crowned the nation’s champion and earned the chance to represent Ghana in the prestigious Continental tournament.

Akufo-Addo continued, “Congratulations to you, the captain, and the squad members for this historic feat.

“It has been 47 years since a Western Region squad took home the trophy. That is fantastic. You did a fantastic job. Congratulations.”

On August 25, Medeama will leave for Nigeria for the second leg after the first leg.

The winner of the match will go on to play Guinean powerhouse Horoya for a spot in the group round.

The last time Medeama competed in CAF inter-club events was in 2016, when they defeated Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa to advance to the Group stages.
