Manasseh Azure Awuni, a renowned investigative journalist, has pronounced Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to be the most formidable contender for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) ahead of the 2028 general elections.
His comment was made in a Facebook post on Friday, June 20, 2025, as the party’s internal debate heated up following the announcement of its impending presidential primary.
Dr. Bawumia’s candidature has sparked extensive attention and conjecture, particularly among party supporters who see him as a unifying and influential figure.
“The NPP’s best bet, the party’s most formidable candidate in the next election, is Dr Mahamudu Bawumia,” Manasseh Azure said in a brief but pointed statement.
Mr Azure’s statement came shortly after the NPP announced that its presidential primaries will take place on January 31, 2026.
The choice, endorsed by the party’s National Council, kicks off what is expected to be a hotly contested internal election as the party seeks a candidate capable of reversing its electoral fortunes.
