President-elect John Mahama has reiterated his commitment to upholding the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy.
He emphasized that the social intervention program is here to stay.
In an interview with Voice of America (VOA), Mahama denied allegations that his administration planned to discontinue the program as unfounded political propaganda.
“Free SHS has come to stay, and it is not going anywhere,” says Mahama.
“No one is going to scrap Free SHS. What was said was political rhetoric and gimmickry. We are going to keep it. What we will do is secure specific funds for it.”
The declaration follows charges made during the election campaign by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) that Mr Mahama’s government will scrap the flagship initiative.
Mr Mahama denied these allegations, blaming them on political misinformation designed to mislead the public.
Mahama added that his administration would endeavor to strengthen the program’s implementation by establishing a long-term funding structure.
This, he claimed, would secure the program’s long-term viability and ability to provide quality education to Ghanaian students.
