President John Dramani Mahama has visited the Central Business District of Adum in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, to examine the damage caused by a terrible fire that destroyed hundreds of shops.
The fire, which broke out in the early hours of Friday, March 21, left dealers devastated as they attempted to save their items amid the turmoil.
During his visit, Mahama spoke with impacted traders, expressing his sympathies and promising his help.
He underlined the importance of taking immediate measures to support people who have lost their jobs, as well as conducting a comprehensive inquiry into the cause of the incident.
However, he urged vendors not to cook at the market because the usage of cylinders contributed to the tragedy.
Meanwhile, the fire that broke out early Friday morning and quickly spread throughout the market was fuelled by flammable items placed in the shops.
Firefighters struggled to suppress the fire due to blocked access routes and delayed response times. Some traders blamed the event on continuing power failures, which they believe may have caused the fire.
President Mahama’s visit was received with thanks and shouts by the traders.
