The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has promised that if elected in the next election, he will give the Rent Control Bill top priority.

Mahama wants to shield renters from the burden of having to pay more than a year’s worth of rent upfront.

In a Facebook post on Friday, June 28, the former president emphasized his commitment to improving housing circumstances as a pillar of his vision for Ghana’s future and expressed solidarity with the country’s 19 million tenants.

Mr. Mahama reaffirmed that his administration would prioritize creating social housing that is accessible and cheap for every Ghanaian.

“Housing is a crucial need, and my government will work tirelessly to develop social housing that is truly affordable and accessible for ordinary Ghanaians. That will be one of my legacies as president.”

“We will also push for the Rent Control Bill to be passed into law to prevent tenants from being unfairly burdened with paying more than one year’s rent in advance.”

“I deeply empathize with the 19 million people in Ghana who are renting and are committed to building a brighter future for all Ghanaians, with housing being a pivotal aspect of that,” he posted.
