President John Dramani Mahama has criticized former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for neglecting to give textbooks to children despite implementing a new curriculum.
President Mahama said at Jubilee Park in Tamale on Saturday, March 22, as part of his ‘thank you’ tour, that his administration has earmarked GHC564.6 million for textbooks to promote learning for basic school children.
He went on to say that Hon. Haruna Iddrisu is in charge of overseeing the initiative’s implementation, which includes printing textbooks locally to help the Ghanaian economy.
“As you may recall, the previous administration modified the curriculum while refusing to provide textbooks for our basic school pupils.
“The no-textbook phenomena will come to an end this year. The implementation of this is the responsibility of your own son, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu [Education Minister]. And he has told us that the textbooks would be printed by Ghanaian printers, ensuring that the money stays in Ghana,” he remarked.
President Mahama also stated that his administration has boosted funds for the school feeding scheme in order to give better lunches to pupils.
He also revealed that funds had been set aside to supply free sanitary pads to female students in order to help them with their study.
“We have allocated resources to provide free sanitary pads for our female students.”
