The government launched the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, often known as Mahama Cares, to offer financial assistance to those afflicted with long-term illnesses like cancer, heart problems, and kidney failure.

UGMC, the University of Ghana Medical Centre, in Accra, hosted the ceremony on Tuesday, April 29, 2025.

In his opening remarks for the Fund, President John Dramani Mahama urged the commercial sector to dedicate their corporate social responsibility to Mahama Cares.

“As this Ghana Medical Trust Fund is coming to your clients who save their money in your banks or do business with you, I want to encourage corporate Ghana, businesses, mines, banks, and all other companies.” Even your own employees are among them.

Therefore, when you offer as part of your Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), think of it as a gift to your own employees or clients. The Ghana Medical Fund will benefit the nation much, so I would want to invite all Ghanaian firms, both public and private, to donate a percentage of their yearly corporate social responsibility (CSR) to it at the end of the year,” he said.

According to Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, Minister of Health, the proposal was long overdue and aims to guarantee equitable access to healthcare, especially for those who cannot afford treatment.

According to the sector minister’s opening statement, parliament will be presented with a draft bill that outlines the fund’s administration structure.

He declared, “The Mahama Cares draft bill is ready and will be submitted as soon as Parliament resumes.”

The removal of the national health insurance firm’s capping is the most significant change, he continued. Because of this action, significant resources have been made available to guarantee that the Mahama Cares Program would now get a specific allotment of funding.
