President John Mahama has reportedly asked the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) to probe former President Akufo-Addo’s official travels throughout his tenure.
According to Asaase Radio, government officials say that it is part of a larger attempt to promote accountability in state resource management.
During Nana Akufo-Addo’s term, opposition parties and civil society organisations repeatedly questioned the excessive costs of his international travel.
In 2021, for example, North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa accused the previous president of wasting millions of cedis on fancy chartered flights instead of using the state-owned presidential jet.
These issues prompted calls for increased transparency and accountability in government expenditure on official travels.
Meanwhile, the government has yet to publicly react on the recent development.
