The National Democratic Congress (NDC) will be holding elections today, Saturday, May 13, to choose its flagbearer and candidates for parliamentary seats.

The Electoral Commission (EC) is going to be in charge of overseeing the elections.

Following the withdrawal of two separate court injunction proceedings that had been brought by Dr. Kwabena Duffuor and Mr. Egdar Asamaa Boateng, the Electoral Commission (EC) explained that it had opted to supervise the polls despite having initially withdrawn from participating in the elections.

Following the discontinuance of the application for an injunction seeking to restrain the EC from conducting the National Democratic Congress (NDC) primaries by the applicants, namely Dr. Kwabena Duffuor and Mr. Edgar Asamoah Boateng, all legal barriers have been removed, and the way is now clear for the Commission to supervise the conduct of the NDC primaries slated for Saturday.

This was stated in a statement that was issued by the Chair of the Commission, Mrs. Jean Adukwei.

“The Commission held meetings with the leadership of the NDC this afternoon in order to finalize the modalities for the conduct of the elections,” the statement read. Elections that are credible and transparent are going to be guaranteed thanks to the preparations that are currently being made.

The National Chairman of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, had stated, prior to the EC’s declaration, that the party was anticipating the Commission holding the primaries because the legal problems had been dealt with. This expectation was confirmed by the EC.

Mr. Asiedu Nketia stated that executives of the party had met with officials from the EC and indicated to them that the problem that had been brought before the court had been settled. As a result, they are anticipating the elections management body to be present and to conduct the polls on their behalf.

He explained that the distribution of electoral materials to all of the polling places is the only item that might possibly have an impact on the polls, but he stated that the party has made provisions to convey all of the materials in record time so that the exercise can go forward as scheduled.

“We are looking forward to them performing their obligation,” he stated at a press conference on Friday, May 12 in Accra.

He continued by saying, “But the election directorate of the party should be on standby.”
