[LIVE] State funeral for fallen eight underway

State funeral

Ghana will say their final goodbyes to the eight people killed in a military helicopter crash on August 6 in Sikaman-Brofroyedru, Adansi Akrofrom District, Ashanti Region.

President John Dramani Mahama, government officials, members of the security services, traditional leaders, and bereaved relatives will attend the state funeral, which will take place in Accra’s Black Star Square.

Following the interdenominational service, Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, former parliamentary candidate for Obuasi East Samuel Aboagye, National Democratic Congress (NDC) Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah will be buried at Tse Addo Military Cemetery.

The other two are Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, and Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, who were buried on 10 August according to Islamic traditions.

The eight officials were killed after a Ghana Armed Forces chopper crashed while on official duty, prompting calls for immediate investment in the country’s military aircraft fleet.

Security will be tight for today’s event, with portions of Accra’s major roadways closed to traffic to allow for the burial procession.
