Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, the Minister of Defence, has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to work with him to protect Ghana’s democracy and reform the Electoral Commission (EC).
Dr. Boamah claims that the NPP disregarded several warnings from the NDC regarding problems with the EC’s activities in the run-up to the 2024 elections, which he says has contributed to the current electoral system crisis.
His remarks come after NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong declared that the party would not participate in the rerun and accused the Electoral Commission of attempting to thwart the people’s will by disobeying a court ruling.
“The NPP has a strong position. Based on data and facts, our candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, won the election. We decided at our National Executive Committee meeting that we would never take part in a rerun,” he continued.
Dr. Boamah, who also serves as the Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), emphasised the importance of bipartisan collaboration in a Facebook post on Wednesday, July 9, 2025.
“NPP: There is still time! Together, we can repair the malfunctioning Electoral Commission and preserve Ghana’s democracy! When the NDC brought up a number of concerns regarding the Electoral Commission [of] Ghana prior to the 2024 elections, the NPP ought to have paid attention. There is yet time.
