The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) students have elected a female to the role of President of the Students Representative Council (SRC), the first female to hold that position in the institution’s 71-year history.
After defeating five other candidates in the election, Yvonne Osei Adobea wrote her name into the annals of history.
She received 8,282 votes, which was enough to win against her primary opponent, Abraham Rockson, who received 4,568 votes.
KNUST elects first female SRC President after 71 years
The third-year Sociology student was able to make a great comeback after falling short of winning the Student Representative Council election the previous year.
Yvonne attended Serwaa Nyarko Girls Senior High School in the Ashanti Region during her high school years. She is the first female student from a school that is exclusively for one gender to ever hold the position of SRC President.
Before she was elected, she was a student activist who fought against the elimination of the Junior Common Room system at the university when fighting broke out between Unity Hall and University Hall. This was before she was elected.
On July 26, 2023, the KNUST Student Representative Council (SRC) held its general election.
